Hey Guys, I am dying for some performance in my 79 SR5. This Carburated 20R motor is absolutley terrible. I have looked at swaps and entertained the thought of a 4age, 1jz, SR20. But i was quoted $8,000 for a 1jz swap and I cant afford that. Im more in line around 3,000 bucks. I have then thought about just rebuilding the 20r, converting to Fuel injection and boosting it. However i cannot find any shops in Dallas or Fort Worth that can handle the job, much less even take the job on due to the age of the truck. My ultimate goal is to get 200-250hp to the wheels. I cant even find good mounts to do the swap myself and i have no fab skills. Everything i see is for 84+ trucks. If all else fails, i will just sell the truck and get a newer model. DOES ANYONE HAVE A REPUATABLE SHOP IN MIND OR KNOW ANYONE THAT CAN DO THE WORK IN THE DFW, TX AREA? It would be much appreciated. I have called Redline Performance(wont do the work) in Arlington, Tried to reach Jotech, (no answer) and have called Tay's Automotive(didnt get a quote, got busy one weekend) in Arlington, TX, and Powerhouse Racing(no quote). Thanks!!
I just did a weber setup from LCE and added an electric air charger from airlutions.com to my 22 R. I live over 6500 so power is starved. Not any more. I couldn't be more pleased
7mge is almost bolt in...1uz is probably the best swap all around. If u want to go fast cheap, look into a carbureted smallblock?
SO does anyone have any sources for the mounts for the GM small block option or even a 1uz for a 79 truck? Thats seems to be where my roadblock is. I have no problem putting motors into the truck. Its the wiring that messing me up. I also do not know what is necessary to complete a swap from carb to fuel injection.
Yea just google what you need for the small block. Wiring it is pretty damn simple. Maybe 5 wires to run the engine
This link is full of info on differnt swaps and set ups. Still not what i am looking for, but it may be helpful in the community. Engine Swap Info
Tacoma 2rz 2.4L or 3rz 2.7L. Both can handle boost pretty well and are a almost a direct bolt in application for a 22re. and they both would get you to your power goals pretty easily. Yotatech's engine swap section will pretty much tell you everything you need to know about doing a swap of any kind to a toyota pickup Engine Swap Talk - YotaTech Forums
Thanks i will check this out. Another issue is going from carbed to fuel injection. Thats my issue as well
$3000 will cover the parts OR the labor to have a shop do a custom engine swap. My suggestion is to build a mild 22r with a light flywheel, swap out the gears in the rear end to something in the 4's and go have fun.
