yes it's shorter. there are some rough measurments of axles on seths site. go to www.twistedminis.com then click forum. it's under the tech section.

if you can find one from the 8" style i say do it. each body style is a little wider than the one before it. 74-78 has a 53" wide rear end. lol.

I'm running a 89 7.5" in my 99 Taco. Where do you guys take your measurement from? Flange to flange with the 4 nuts on each end of the axle tubes?

if you drive with a heavy foot, just make sure you find an 8" not a 7.5" style. its a small difference, but no reason not to. and if i remember right the 82 style is about an inch wider than the ones i have. all depends how much rim you plan to tuck with it.

by trimming the housing then cutting the splines longer? or is there enough spline that a trim is available? i would LOVE to narrow mine a bit to have a little more rear offset. not tons, just a little. cuz i wanna rehoop my stock style steelies front and rear to like 6" and 7" hoops from their 5"s

there is an extra inch of splines.

just so it's out there. i seen the info on seths site. www.twistedminis.com

i'd suggest contacting him and making sure that it will work on the old axle as well.

thats awesome. ive seen people take a 3" cutoff to extend axle splines. and chop saws. lol. but that much would probably be enough. id need a good welder though. and an extra rear end.
