What's a good Irs tht could handle a 1jz motor. I was planning to use a supra turbo one but what else would work
go for it. the suspension design will be nice. I know the S2000's rear ends are extremely weak... Kia units... what can you expect? the RX7's are nice, i'm just unsure of the strength of the rearend itself.
Width is your biggest issue, look at the S4 or S5 RX7 for the closest I know of. There could be others but the less you need to mod the better, particularly stud pattern and brakes. Callum
I really wanna use a mkIII rear end to keep it all Toyota. But I'm not sure yet. An need to figure this out since I'm buying a stock frame in 2 weeks an then I'm getting a rear end
ive heard jaguar rear ends are pretty hardy, ive seen one in a toyota ONCE. Looked cool too cause the rotors are next to the diff instead of outboard. its a bitch to change the breakes, but would look sic
before i bought a i.r.s. i compared a bunch of them in the junkyard. the supra axle shafts were almost twice as thick as all the others. it might fit in your year with a high offset wheel. mine rubbed a little so i narrowed it.
There is also the MKII Celica Supra. The independent suspension for it was designed by Lotus. Has rear discs. 1982 had 3.72:1 diff ratio. Not sure about power handling but they made MKIIs with 160 hp 170torque. Or MR2 with rear mounted engine bwahahahaaa!!
The Celica Supra rear is what I used in my Starlet, I put the whole floorpan in though. They are a semi trailing arm setup and camber up badly when lowered with no factory adjustability, relatively easy to modify to fix this though. They should be an F code 7.5" rear (some lower spec models were only T series but not sure on US market options) and have plenty of strength and LSD options out there. Width is around 1450mm from memory which ties in well with factory Hilux widths. Callum
Im just going to say this to put it out there..... But when 03-04 Cobra guys start building real power, they remove the cobra IRS system and bolt in a GT style 4 link. The IRS system is great for handling and ride comfort, but with any type of racing, the wheelhop gets crazy and unpredicible to the point of those guys swap it out. Just saying it because its an issue that would need to be thought over. And what woud be wrong with a live axle???
Eh, live axle's weren't really made for the twisties.... Sorry to say that. IRS will always rule the corners, well look at high end sports cars
When I was looking for the IRS for my truck I wanted a Supra rear setup & come to find out that the Lexus GS430 has the same IRS-(width, gears, etc) as the Supra & in most cases is cheaper! So thats what I bought & plan to install it this winter.
I would expect for a minitruck you aren't building it to be a road racer, the whole point is to be cambered out at both ends. So my approach would be a rear end that can be adjusted to give a little camber at ride height and not destroy tyres, while giving max camber when dropped. Narrowing adds cost and complication to the job so avoid it if you can. Being a minitruck a big chunk of the appeal is looks so try to avoid an IRS with a big cradle that hides everything, if you have the skills though you can just use the centre and uprights with custom arms and driveshafts to suit. Before you decide I would check over what others have used to see how the result came out. Callum
I won't be doing any racing with it I just like the look of them what year did u get the lexus IRS out of
