So, my transmission is going out. I can hear it grind through all 5 gears. I want to replace it with a used transmission. I am unsure however what transmission i current have. I did some research and found that I may have a w-50. Where can i find the identification marks on my transmission? Please help!!

    Thanks

Vin plate will tell you what came stock in your truck. I say it that way because who knows if its been swapped

What jetas is trying to say is that toyota didn't put ID plates on the transmissions and they are interchangeable (with correct bellhousing) between pickups, celicas and supras, etc.

So, in your case (1981) you can use a 5 speed from rwd celicas, supras and pickups from '79-95.

Thanks Guys! I looked under the hood and found that I the vin plate says I have a W50 transmission. So according to YOguyDA i can install a transmission from an 84-88 2 wd drive truck? It came off of a 22r motor. As long as it is a 5 speed too the mounting bracket is the same right?
    Thanks again!

    The W50 came OEM in 73-81 Celica's with the 20R. 73-81 corona's w/20R and 76-82 pickup w/20R.

The W50 and L43 (4 speed) are both 20.8 inches long, and will fit your truck with no modifications to the driveline.
All mid 80's W55 + are 25.5 inches long. It can be made to fit, but may require some fabrication.
If you junk your W50, save the shifter assembly. They are unique to that transmission only. Very hard to find. May even be worth some $.
