I was wondering what the stock gearing for a 2wd 5-speed pickup is
I am looking to change my gearing because at 65mph my truck is screaming! I need longer final gear. A friend told me auto gearing is better.

Another friend has a rear axle from a auto 4x4. Would it fit and would it improve my final gear?
    Any help is appreciated!! Thanks!!

if you have a 5 speed, you have a 3:56 gear ratio.

if you have a 4 speed, you have a 3:07 gear ratio.

you will have to do either 1 of 2 things.

    a) you locate a complete rear end out of a truck that had a 4 speed in it. you can identify this rear end by the center of the drum area. casted on the axle center will be 4 cast line marks in the position i have drawn below....

this will be a cheaper route than having to regear your 3rd and will likely require less down time. the 3rd out of a 4 speed axle housing will not fit into one of a 5 speed housing. reason for this is that the 4 speed diff is an 8 inch rear end, and the 5 speed diff is a 7.5 inch. unless you have a housing out of a 4 speed truck, your friends diff will not fit.

this 3:07 gear ratio will drop you an easy 500 rpm's from where you currently run at now. basically, like adding another gear almost...

    b) you can regear your current 3rd and see what options are available but unlikely you will find anything as high geared as the factory toyota gearing.

if you find a axle housing for a 4 speed truck, i do have a spare locked 3rd with 3:07 gearing i could sell you :waytogo:

the 4x4's did have 4:11 gears. the 2wd's had 3:56's

thing is the 4x4's have 8 inch diffs on the 5 and 4 speeds.

    the 2wd 5 speed has a 7.5 diff.

go buy a complete axle off of a 4 speed truck. it'll swap right over..... and your gearing will come back up. do you guys not have junk yards over there?

Auto equipped trucks are typically geared 1 step lower than manuals, for ex, if a manual had 4.10, an identical truck w/auto trans would have 4.30

You'd have to do some minor cutting and welding to make it fit, 2WD trucks are SUA, while 4WDs are SOA. It's gear ratio would be 4.30, or maybe even 4.56 if it had the factory 31" tire package.
