When is the best time? Ok, what I'm trying to find out is how many of you guys have actually gone ahead and removed the head, had it re-worked, simply because of there being a lot of miles and not necessarily because there was a problem? How many miles can we *realistically* get out of these motors (20R - 22R) without really having to bother with the head? (Assuming we are not the original owners and don't know everything that has happened to the motor throughout it's life.) How many go by the, "...if it ain't broke, don't fix it," saying? Thanks for your input. I've got an 82' 22r with 185,000 that still seems ok. (knock on wood). Trying to plan out my "project" budget for the next few months.
Good question - personally I have a 'tick' that I'm sick of hearing and would like to pull the top end for some work, but at the end of the day I will probably drive it until it stops and then repair the engine. Cash is king right now and I don't have money to spend on something like that - although I'd like to.
where is that "tick" coming from? the front of engine? or top? middle back of head? its its from the front bottom area, the timing chain is worn and slapping on the timing cover case. if not, it can just be your valves need adjusting. the tick i had was a worn timing chain and it eat up my cover, had to get a new set off ebay for 100 bux w new water pump and oil pump too.
That's why I absolutely LOVE the pre-83 2xr. Dual chain and steel guides. I've been told by a fellow forum member that the dual chain will probably outlast the motor itself. Without a doubt, I believe him. Having recently done a valve adj. I got a chance to see the chains, myself.
