I like the turbo mufflers on 4cyl. I think that's what they're categorized as. Straight through unrestricted perforated tube, surrounded by some batting to quiet the sound, they flow yet are fairly quiet at idle and not raspy. A glass pack is similar concept, but with minimal batting. Something like a flowmaster has chambers inside and you cannot see straight through it, to me they sound better behind a v8 and sound bad on small engines. I've got a 93, 22re truck that I upgraded most of my exhaust after CAT theft. It is pretty quiet but has some deeper tone and a little grunt when you're on it. It has stock header (1.5" ID?) going to maybe half length of the stock y-pipe (1.75"?), then I go up to 2" pipe and through a high flow CAT, then changes to 2.25"with a round mangaflow turbo muffler (6"x18" approximating here) and exits stock location. My new 75 pickup has a flowmaster and is carbed, but is significantly louder and I don't care for the sound, it's too ricey/flashy and stupid loud enough to set off car alarms. It's got a 20r with Webber 32/36, hedman header to 2.25" od pipe, through a 2.25" ID flowmaster oval muffler (unknown group, probably a 40), and out stock location. I plan to swap the flowmaster out. I was looking at summit catalog and found Jones Exhast, so I think I'm gonna use one of those since it's designed like a mangaflow, but at 1/2 the price
yup, turbo mufflers sound good. im running a 3in hooker maxflo. i think now they are called "aerochamber" like perkolator mentioned, its a straight through design with perforated chambers on either side of the main tube.(if that makes any sense) got a nice deep rumble at idle and screams at high rpms.
I just ran 2 2"x12" hotdogs on a 2" system on my 79 with 18rc but now I have the 18RG with extractors I run a turbo muffler and 1 2"x12" hotdog on a 2" system with a dump pipe in front of the diff.
12" is rather short, but mine's only 18" long. Interesting side note... Perforated core resonators actually flow exhaust gasses better than straight pipe.
