Im going to buy a new puckup but I dont know whether to get an RE or keep it R and put a better carb on it??? any suggestions
plain and simple! EFI= good gas mileage, CARB= not as good. just depends what your likings are. i love carbs and always get rid of my EFI.
well I love gas mpg but I would also like good performance... so which is better for either thing and aout how different... Like if I would put a weber 32/36 on how would that go against an EFI
I had both the 22R & 22RE...both are great engines. My 88 Toyota had the 22R with an ass of mods that included a 38mm Weber, header, street performance cam, MSD ignition & a few more goodies. The performace part was awesome, but the gas milage sucked!! The engine in my truck now is the 22RE with an intake, MSD coil & wires, header & Flowmaster exhaust. Its got great peformance & the gas milage is still pretty good. You can get great performance out of the 22RE & you can eveb go as far as adding an aftermarket turbo kit!
id say they are both pretty equal.. cept EFI has a major advantage. carbs are old tech, you could get close to 30mpg with a minor build on the eng and a 32/36. or you could get up to 15 with dual sidedrafts and a fully built eng. almost the same goes for efi, mostly stock/lightly built eng you can get better mpg's n power then stock. but with mega squirt you can drasticly improve the efficiency of the motor, ive heard of over 35 out of a mostly stock 22re + MS. carbs dont really keep up in the efficiency dept. you can get just as much performance out of them as EFI. id say learn EFI and stick with it, carbs can be learned later . better upgrades are availible for them to tune then a carb will ever have.
if you do go with a carb, I would get a weber put on, or if you have the extra money, Downey Off-Rd has a 350 Holley carb for the 22R
here is my engine to give you an idea. and running dual carbs aint for the beginners at all. you better have someone in mind or the brains to help you TUNE it its easy when you have practice but trying to sync it with no knowledge would be very difficult.
also if you get EFI just remember when you wanna go CARB you cannot use the stock EFI distributer, you would have to get one from a carb'ed motor.
I was also wondering that as well. Looks like you took one with a few bends and straightened it. On the other hand the Carb setup looks mint! But back to the original question i would go with EFI. MPG, Reliablility, Performance and simplicity. EFI has it all. But.... Carbs can be sweet too, as Grounds has quite nicely showed us!
^ nice! I think it's personal preference... Some like carbs and don't care about MPG (like me ) and some go for MPG... It's really up to you and your driving style. I prefer to make noise when i mash the throttle!!
Totally in agreement, I like the sound when I lay on the gas pedal and hear it open up and take off; EFI doesnt have this same exitement, sure less gas mileage and such, but its all about the sounds to me . . .
The sidedrafts definately have their own distinct sound, but if you want noise, bolt on a supercharger, DAMN!!!
Oh I bet, Ive only seen and heard ( in person ) one Toyota 22r with sidedrafts and it was AWESOME. . . I guess I lead a shallow life here in Montana, no shows for many many miles . . .
totally efi can make some pretty noises too. take out the silencer from the intake and drill some holes in the air box, sound a bit better. but there is nothing like all the noise coming from the carb.
you control ze throttle plates but yeah the compooter controls the fuel to air ratios. but still produces that nice sound too.
I only find carbs around here and I looked on LCE to see what I needed to do a conversion from EFI to carb... a bit lost... if its too complicated ill just stick with a carb... just debating on if I should get a 32/36, 38, or just go striaght for crazy with the duals
