The 82' truck I just purchased came with a factory A/C unit that no longer works. It looks like the previous owner already removed a couple of the hoses, but for some reason left a couple of others.

It's pulley is still running off 1 of 2 belts.

I'd like to remove the A/C unit and the remaining hoses and run just one belt like the 20R in my 79' - is it just that simple or am I missing something?

The A/C unit is just above that "air pump" to the left of the motor. Remember?? - the alternator look-alike. :) These two share the one belt which ultimately leads to the last of three grooves (closest to the radiator) on the crankshaft pulley.

The second belt, which rides the third groove furthest away from the radiator, is shared by the water pump and alternator.

Just took some pics with my cp. But it's taking a few minutes to send them to my email....then my email to my photobucket.....etc.

I'm sure it's safe to assume that not all 82's had A/C, so I've just got to figure out what belt those guys were running, and at worse, do some shimming to line it all up.

    I hope. :)

You can hear the bearings on the A/C unit and it really makes the motor louder than it really is. Just a whole lot of noise and useless drag on the motor.

if you still need a belt where the AC was, you can get the stocker belt.

    just specify "no AC"

you will not need to shim

Mine has AC but, no factory air pump... So, my engine bay pics won't be worth anything...

*You will need some spacers for the timing cover when you remove the AC compressor mount or you can use shorter bolts too...

How old does the truck/car have to be to be excempt from the smog checks overthere?

For now I just want to get her all caught up with a thorough cleaning and tune-up. Change out some hoses and clamps. Then give her a new carb and eventually a header.

As for the smog exempt (pre-76') Celicas, man, they want a pretty penny for them from what I've seen. Rarely see them made available, but when they are, even in "needing a lil TLC" shape, they command a pretty penny. The one's I've seen around here (SF Bay Area) are all done up and in the $2k to $4K range.

The only Celicas I've seen that I've liked are similar to ShoNuff's ST. Especially when they are lowered. I think the "lines" are timeless and classy. Personal preference. :)

You weren't kidding!! Those are pretty high priced... I'd still buy it tho, if I had the money!

If i ever was to build a domestic muscle car it would have to be a 68-69 camaro... Hence the resemblance to the little celica! *lol

Thanks for the pics (doorslammer). :) No, haven't had the chance to get it done, yet. But I'm off the next few days, so I will be trying to resolve it, soon.

The weather here in the Bay Area is pretty mild. Though summers can get HOT in certain areas, being so close to the Bay, the heat just isn't the same as it is in Texas.

With that in mind, I'd rather keep the engine bay free of any unnecessary clutter. Plus the bearings on the AC pulley are just way too loud, not to mention the unnecessary drag.

Last but not least, the unit was already missing a couple of hoses when I got the truck, so I'm assuming even the previous owner gave up on it. I'm not about to waste anytime trying to restore the d*mn thing. :D

when i did my 78, i took the air pump and a/c pump off. they ran a belt circuit off the crank. the only other belt i have does crank/WP/alt. i have a full stock dealer a/c setup from a 78 if anybody is interested in it. some is pulled, most isnt.
