I dunno, these are pretty rare, I'm tempted. Ever seen the price of a WAY more common VW bus or TypeIII bus-truck that's been sitting in a field with no drivetrain for 20 years? lol
I agree with you on the rare aspect of the car. Rare car also means less parts supliers, and every where you take it to be worked on people are going to charge more. Cause no one that is struggling for cash is going to buy a rare car. Just my opinion. That is why I said the asking price is to high. To much work need to be done to it. In the teens asking price I believe it is worth it. After the body work and paint, engine and trans rebuilt, and interior reapholstered. You will be around 13k. Then you can enjoy it or sell it if you want. I have no idea what they go for. I have never seen one for sale.
It's definitely on the higher end of what someone would want to pay for a non-running vehicle, but from the few pics it looks to me it's got all it's body panels with no visible accidents or major rust, appears to have all it's glass intact and is stored under a carport instead of in full elements. Sure it's a project, but I've seen much worse specimens for sale in years past asking the same $ Personally I wouldn't even consider bringing it back to stock condition. Buy up a used 1uz Lexus for $1k and swap over the drivetrain (or whole front suspension/engine cradle to upgrade handling/steering/braking), give some love to the cab interior and drive the piss out of it as a ratrod that you'd likely never see someone else driving. As much as I love my Hilux, I'd take a Stout or an FJ40 over it in a heartbeat - but I've got too many projects on my hands, I really need to get my dad's Olds fixed up first since it's soooo close to being drivable.
Might as well post up the other ones I saw too: 1976, looks well cared for, dunno if I've seen chromed grill before $4500 https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/d/1976-toyota-hilux-pickup-truck/6480334767.html 1978, pretty clean looks original and looks to even have AC! $5000 https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/d/78-toyota-hilux/6463695373.html 1978, seen this truck posted several times in last few months - it's completely disassembled, but based on the parts he has for bagging it, it could be worth it for someone https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/d/1978-toyota-hilux-pickup/6459903654.html
Since you guys are so good at finding parts for these truck. I would like to ask for your help on helping me find the marker lights on the bed. I'm missing the driver side and can't seem to find it any where. Last year I found something on ebay that claim to be the right light's but they were not. If you guys come across these little babies please let me know.
the little ones on the side of the bed? i'll keep my eye out if anyone finds some mirrors that look anything like the stock non-trucker style mirrors, I'm interested. I want matching R/L mirrors, but something "classic" is hard to find when the majority of those cars back in the day only had one mirror, lol.
@Perkolator I use ford f150 side mirror on mine they look very similar to the old original and are $35 for the pair. You do have to do some bendig to get them to fit the old wholes. The door bracket fits the truck wholes perfectly.
There were two styles of mirrors on our model Hilux -- the "trucker style" like you have on your truck and a much much smaller one on a stem. I'm looking for matching stem mirrors that look semi period-correct. Lots of fender mirrors but they're too big and cheap-looking aftermarket repops for putting on the doors.
i need to transfer all my pics to a new web host, but here's a pic of a truck with the mirror style I found in Google:
