I think my fuel filter has gone really bad. I'm at 158,6xx miles and my truck will sputter (and backfire?) like no other when i'm under load, past 35 on first, and past 45 on second and so on so forth.... i can barely go on highways. it seems that the high RPM's the engine isn't being fed enough. so tell me everything i need to know about that fuel filter. 1. I know it's a pain in the ass to get to. 2. What size do i Need? If there's a larger size i can bolt in.... I'LL DO IT!! 3..... << add more! let other members contribute and learn!
Removal of your starter first will make it easier to get to the fuel filter. If not your going to need a long extension. I don't think there is a bigger one you can bolt in but go with OEM if you can or go to NAPA and get their WIX filters. Your well over due for a change at 158,000 miles.
Yes...Id say its time to change the one on the block & yes its a pain to do lol! I bought my filter from Advance Auto Parts, but any parts store will have what you need Im sure & I would just the factory one back in. Also...whens the last time you changed the spark plugs & wires??
pretty damn near. About 156k I got new NGK plugs. and the wires are also new in good shape. What's a large OEM Toyota fuel filter that would go in place of mine? Cause mine is for a 2.4L inline four, of course. Soooo would a fuel filter for a 2JZ (or 5M) be in place of mine? since it would have to filter more for the larger motor. Or another way to put it is like, larger filter has a larger screen inside of it too.
I don't see a reason to use a bigger fuel filter. I just had mine replaced a few months ago by my bro-in-law at 168k. Like FOKAI said, if you have an extension you don't need to remove anything.
After you replace it, get one of those cheap plastic inline filters and put it in the softline back by the tank. Those are so much easier to change. Much cheaper, too.
yea my autozone one was 15 bucks. to change it, go through the passenger wheel wheel, if u got an airratchet, its gonna save u some time, ur gonna have to get the bolt on top at an angle.... i think its all 10mm
$4 for one of the universal plastic ones. They don't filter quite as well, but they catch all of the large stuff. And, they only take 5 minutes and a screwdriver to change! How much is your time worth?!
False alarm... I think most of you hate GROUND wires too. Well, lets keep this thread here in case someone needs to do their filter. When i do mine, I was told to do it by feeling since it's near the oil filter.
Hey guys, I was having some hesitation when accelerating issues as well, I just replaced my fuel filter today, I did not have to remove my starter, I actually went through my passenger side wheel well and also from the front of the intake manifold. I am sure it would have been alot easier to remove the starter but I was trying to do this in my apartment complex parking lot, which is a no-no. Anyway, I was wondering if I should be worried about the air that I introduced to the fuel system, I did not depressurize the system like the manual said. And if I should, is there a way that I can bleed the air out of the system? Thanks in advance.
P.S. I am not sure if this fixed my problem, but after I took it on a test run on the highway, I died out at the traffic light going back to my apartment, any ideas why? Thanks again.
depressurized I think you have to remove the fuel cap, and let it sit for a bit. Does your motor run hot or anything? any fuel leaks?
Motor isn't running hot and no fuel leaks, I'm gonna run her today and see if changing the filter helped. Anymore ideas on why the hesitation?
Did this hesitation occur before you changed the filter? All I can think of as of now is if you accidentally forget to install some ground wire. I'll let someone else rain on this but, try check your distributor and see if there's no water or moisture and stuff. its not like we go off road or anything, but just to check. Intake pipe from the VAFM to the Throttle Body should have no leaks also. just check essentials. Good luck!
