Small ports and valves have better velocity, so they retain a bit of the bottom end that a race prepped 22r head would sacrifice for top end power. But other than needing a cam, I can't complain about top end power on mine. For a bunch of basically stock parts, and some top end work...it moves great.

Sorry I have been busy with school and haven't been keeping up on the forum.

I am the same guy who sold you the parts in Newcastle.

My dad was the original owner of my truck and the only thing he did was install a radio. Your first thought when you saw the block sitting there you thought it was a laser block. How can I check? It does have domed pistons.

How hard would it be to put the double chain gear into the single chain 22r? I have a 20r crack with the double sprocket on it.

Anyone happen to have a spare 20r head around I could get for cheap? I only have the head 20r on my daily driver. Would it work somehow to use the stock 22r head and increase compression? I think I heard the chamber shape is what changes between heads but I am just wondering.

22 head on a 20 block will have ultra low compression. Guys at engine builder told me about 7.5ish. So without boost, it would lose power. 81/82 22s had a double chain. 83/84 had a single, but were still the shorter engine block. You can use 20r cover plate and a timing chain kit for a 75-82 20/22r. Water and oil pumps are the same, as is the balancer.

Isn't it the other way around... 85+ shorter?

:nana: We musta been having the same thoughts at the same time, :waytogo:

FWIW, late model, laser block engines, late 84 to early 85 and up had a short deck and short head, early engines used a taller block and taller head.

Wouldnt it be easier for you at this point to bore the crud out of a 20R and use 22R early pistons?

Ive heard it takes quite a bit of milling several parts to a late 22R engine to build a hybrid. Would'nt be worth it IMO.

:hyjack: What kind of 22RE head is a single chain 84 celica, tall or short? Same or different than a 81/82 other than the chain sprocket? Just wondering...

my bad. laser blocks are taller. to run a 20r head on them you mill the head. i have an 81 block with a 78 head in my truck now. runs great. and you can ultra bore a 20 block but your machine shop will hate you. its a 3.5mm difference in bore stock vs stock. thats about .140" overbored. but if anyone wants to, i have stock 81 pistons :D

either way, the 20r head needs a decking to match up to the laser. see everyone, this is why i don't like the laser motors.
