I would like to start to do my own things on the truck, notch, tubs etc., what is the best at home welder to use? I know you get what you pay for but as always, money matters lol
A lot of good buying info here http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/buying.htm Good general info here http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/mig.htm
Any frame work you should use a 220 welder, with that being said there are 110/220 welders that are very good. Miller & Lincoln both have these machines!
Personally I'd go for something like a Miller 211 --- expensive but it's a dual voltage welder, so you can plug it into 220v and do the structural stuff, then switch it over to 110v and do sheet metal. I'm currently limited to a Lincoln 140 mig.
Miller or Lincoln are nice welders.... at wyotech they had the lincolns.. they were pretty easy to adjust and took alot of abuse from students. I had a few Lincoln welders... I think a mig pak 15 or something equivalent to it would be good for home use. Everyone has a preference on what's better.
I've used most wire feed welders from miller and Lincoln from their cheap Flux core units up to their mid sized (250 amp) units. The small welders will indeed stick metal together but they are limited to sheet metal for the most part. I picked up a lincoln 140c for home use a few years ago and I'm very pleased with the purchase. It runs on 120 household voltage and is capable of 1/4" plate in a single pass. Yes that 1/4" material needs to be prepared right and the duty cycle of the welder isn't huge but I have yet to have it kick off on me and in this world when are you going to be using anything over 1/4" material? Even the toyota frame is made of sheet metal so an industrial welding machine isn't needed.
