My 1988 Reg cab has a knocking or clunk sound that comes from it when driving( turning wheel ). I have figured out that if I open the hood and grab the steering shaft out of the firewall and shake it that is where it comes from. What is it that goes bad in there ? Is it a bushing or bearing or isolators ?? Anyone ever replace one or fix this issue I would appreciate any insight. I am wanting to swap to a tilt columm but want to make sure that the noise is gone when I put it all back together. Thanks, 22R88
In the Toyota Parts Catalog, the part is called a retainer. You will need 2 (upper & lower). If you move forward with converting to a tilt steering, then this will be a good time to replace them. You will have to pull the steering column just to verify, but this is my suspicion that the retainers are cracked.
Appreciate the response. Can you provide a link. The Parts breakdown on toyotapartsdirect.com doesn't show it. Thanks, 22R88
