^all questions about trannie, diff, what not, can all be found on the VIN plate, very helpful little thing.
ok my plate tells me its a W50 transmission, BUT the old lady i got it from told me her husband changed it with an 84-88 fuel injected 22R TRANNY which is a w55. now is there any way i can verify which tranny it is by looking at the tranny itsself?
Unfortunately, Toyota didn't put ID plates or anything on them... You can guess, using various info gathered, but it seems the best way to ID it, would be to pull it out, turn the input shaft and see what your gear ratios tell you it is.
SR5 was just an options package... So, a 1981 SR5 would typically have a 5speed, tachometer, maybe bucket seats, a graphics package, power steering, A/C...etc.
Measure the length of the tranny. The W50 will be 20.8 inches long. Anything longer is a W56 or 58. Another thought. Take a picture of your transmission along with the measurement and contact Marlin Crawler. They wrote the book on Toyota transmissions.
If the 82 comes with a W50 would the guts be the same? I need a reverse gear shifter fork for my 78 and having a heckuva time locating one. I might have found one if the 82 fits thought.
