Hey everyone, i picked up this 81 a couple days ago, astonishingly i only paid $200!!! anyways, it has a few issues, but runs fantastic. The one issue i tinkered with all day is the Tachometer...it dosn't work... I tried to trace wires to see if maybe that was the issue, but i got lost lol. how can i test it to see if maybe its just wiring, or if i need to replacce it?

dont know much about the 81's, but -there should be a tach signal wire from the igniter/coil (i think) that runs in to the back of the cluster. if u get a signal there -most likely the prob is in the wire to the tach or the tach itself.

i swapped out my combometer for an SR5 one, had to run a separate wire from the igniter to cluster cuz there was none in the factory harness.

im in the same boat. this is my first time playing under the hood of an 81, I was searching around for a signal wire, but found nothing, i think its the green w/blk stripe, but i cant find any proof... thats just what i figured out from 2hrs of tracing wires, and getting lost a couple times. i wish it was simple like my 94... just plug into the IG port on the fuse box.

Lol well i can help the both of us i think...maybe... Use a USPS small flat rate box, you can fill it with lead and it's only $12 i think. do you have anything else laying around for an 81?

let me change that, i just read online, a small flat rate box 8-5/8 x 5-5/8 is only $5.80 to ship :waytogo::waytogo: I'll get with my buddie Joe. He's looking at JY's around Fontana for some other parts for me. I'll have him get it from you, because he's like my extended wallet out there lol.

figured out why my tach dosn't work... the needle is broke off inside the tach, i cant get it out so it looks like i need a new one.
