I have a 78 toyo hilux and the header is cracked and the whole exhaust is full of holes and cracks. I need to change it all. What type of header have you guys swapped out with? Summit racing has some options for $160 and up.

    Any recommendations?

This was a common problem with the early 20R’s. The factory heat shield caused the manifold to crack between #2 and #3 exhaust ports. Headers will work, but if you can find a factory cast that’s the way to go.

A factory cast will be almost impossible to find.

Agreed. If you’re replacing the down pipe at the same time headers may work. Big thing is getting everything to match up.

I plan on replacing the whole exhausted from the engine to the tail pipe. It's all old corroded and full of holes. I'm not going to do the work because I don't have the tools for that job or the skill set to weld. So fitment and placement will not be my problem. But I do need to bring them the headers. I want to make it, so they just focus on bending, welding and attaching pipes. I'm looking for something better then stock maybe a bigger diameter, that won't crack in the next 3 years.

I have Hedman header on my 20r, I dunno exactly which one it is but Hedman website lists 3 options available.
LCE also carries two headers for the 20r.

I've been running my Doug Thorley header since the mid-80's, so this would be my suggestion. Also, get a Magnaflow cat and match it up with a Flowmaster muffler.

@Henry I was looking at both those options and I think the long one might get in the way of the steering box. So I might go with the short one. Unless some one is running the longer one and is fine.

Anyone know if either of those will fit a 72-74 with a 20/22r?

@nottoshabi my concern isnt fitting the engine, its fitting between the engine and frame. The earlier trucks had a narrower front clip.

I picked up the long tube pace setter and it seems like it will clear the steering box. It did hit the bracket on the transmission from the old exhaust, but after removing it I think it will fit just fine. I did wrap the header and that is now rubbing there, but if I trim it back a little bit it should fit. I'll post updates when I finally have it installed.

Please post some pics. I'm looking to do this and would like to know if there will be any crazy things I need to prepare for.
