anyone know of a 6-speed tranny that i can use in my 84? i feel like i need another gear. my truck still pulls in 5th really good and i don't really like cruising at 3k down the freeway

not without alot of custom work......

you can go with a supra tranny which has higher gears

actually........ 3k is about where these motors like to cruise at. they need a little rpm to keep a decent amount of power to keep the underload off the motors. they will spin at this rpm a bit more efficiently better than a lower rpm with more load.

i dont really have much of a load though. i can stomp on it at 65 and be to 85 in no time. i have a celica 5-speed in it now. i just though a 6-speed would be better both on the engine and for the driving

i have thought about that, but i like my acceleration power now. i'll do some research and figure something out. i wish there was a two speed diff that i could use like the ones on some big rigs

actually...... you could do a 2 speed splitter from advanced adaptors. this would probably generate a ~30-40% overdrive....... thing is this would be technically a gear splitter so this means you would technically have a 10 speed :D

but, its also kinda expensive to do.....

thing is even if you got a supra 6 speed keep in mind the transmission gear ratios are different so they probably would not act like your current tranny. they are meant to have a 300hp car pushing the car along so they may leave your truck out of its power range in some gears

i say at this point a better option is to go to a different gear ratio. kinda hard to have great gears for acceleration and overdrive in the same trans unless you go full custom.

Mine feels the same, like it needs another gear, the newer tacomas have a 6spd trans see if you can do something with that:shrug:

i think if im not mistaken the transmissions off the tacomas have the sae bellhousng to case pattern. so i would say count the splines and see if its actually true.

lc engineering has like 2.5:1 final gear ratios . you should try those out. and since its a 2wd installing these should be a crackers, except for the crushing the sleeve part lol.

^ Newer Tacoma trannies use a different bellhousing, they will not bolt up to a 20/22R... It will with the right bell tho...

IMO~ The 6-speed will not do you any better than your 5-speed celica trans... Just more gears to shift thru! Do you know what gear ratio you have now? There are lots to select from that you "can" actually find one with good acceleration and final drive cruise...

It would be cool to have a 6-speed tho! Just imagine saying something like... Yea man I can chirp the tires in all 6 gears!

    LOL Bye! would be great.

eh, that V160/161 6 speed in reliability would not break from a 22R's power... you'd either snap the driveshaft or have a bad clutch if you were trying to abuse it.

yea........ as it is when i launch my truck i have a good enough final drive where i can the tires from spinning too fast and get a good leading edge from the extended gear ratio...

im running the w55 trans with a 3:07 4 speed rear end...... makes cruising 85mph @ 2800rpms possible

wich reminds me...... i found myself a police trailer with a radar indicated speed read out and my speedo is off by 30 mph at anything after 45mph on the speedo..... i verified this a few times on different radar trailers. its off by 15 - 20 mph on anything at low speed.

oh bye i meant the bellousing off the 22r block on the tacoma trasmission case, not the tacoma bellhousing on a 22r.

would be a good thing to upgrade to a 8" diff :D

honestly ive never heard of people busting gears like that out of the trucks..... its pretty rare for them to go
