damn iGotta get me a 5speed. 15in wheels on low-pros kill my highway gas mileage. iGotta question, im assuming the w58 uses a speedometer cable but which side of the trans is the hole for the cable?
Which is a good point on the speedo cable, am i going to have calibration issues? because my truck has the 85 mph speedo in it
I will pm you. the speedo is on the passenger side i believe. I remember when I put it on, mine was too short so i bought a new one for 40 bucks. Its the gear inside the trans where the speedo cable connects that will mess up your calibration so you would need to put the gear from your stock trans and that should keep it all good I think.. but then again im not sure... I never worried about it...
thanks! yea iFigured my cable was too short... imma start lookin for a trans as soon as iGet some new tires.
mine was the electric cable. What rear ends do you have with your transmissions?? I'm turning 2400 at 70mph and 2000 at 60mph. Saying that I like my W58 is a lie, saying that I love my W58 is an understatement! It's such an awesome upgrade (let's not forget i had an automatic lol)
Let's not forget to say that the W58 is stronger than all of the manuals found in the trucks. For a 3.41 rear end with stock height tires, I turn 1750 in 4th and 1350 in 5th doing 40mph.
Yup, the w58 is the way to go. Powerband in 1st through 4th gear. And I love the 5th gear for overdrive/cruising on the freeway. And with this baby I'm still getting about 20-22 mpg w/ 3.73 gears at 2500rpm in 5th gear!
Yup, reference below. W55 This was the first of the aluminum-shelled W-series transmissions. The W55 appears to be a base reference point for gear ratios that Toyota used to fine tune later models of the W-series. Ratios: First Gear: 3.566:1 Second Gear: 2.056:1 Third Gear: 1.384:1 Fourth Gear: 1.00:1 Fifth Gear: 0.85:1 Reverse: -4.091:1 W58 It differs from the W57 in its fifth-gear ratio. This transmission is popular as a replacement for weak stock transmissions in other vehicles. It came in two varieties: the original found in the 1982-1989 non-turbo Supras, Celicas and Cressidas of the early 1980s; and the later version found in Mk3, Mk 4 Supras and Lexus SC 300s. Toyota lists a change from an alloy sandwich plate to a steel sandwich plate around 1989. The steel sandwich plate has some minor internal differences, and it is believed to be slightly stronger (some wider bearings, some wider gears, slightly different gear selection mechanism, etc.). In theory the all-alloy version of the W58 should be exactly the same strength as any other all-alloy W-Series transmission. The steel plate version is considered much harder to find and worth approximately three to five times as much as an all alloy version. The ratios and bolt patterns remain the same regardless of the sandwich plate used. The W58 & W57 share the highest gearing and closest ratios (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (direct)) of the stock W-Series transmissions. The ratio shift was accomplished by taking the W55 base ratios and changing the input shaft to intermediate shaft ratio by 7.9%, thus shifting 1, 2, 3 ratios higher by that amount. This also shifted the overdrive 5th gear higher by the same amount creating a wider and taller overdrive ratio. The W58 is sometimes designated as a "close-ratio transmission"; however, in its stock form it does not meet all the criteria for a close-ratio box. Toyota engineers have shown favor to the W58 over the rest of the 'W' series by including it in so many models and even building a stronger version for higher powered applications. Ratios: First Gear: 3.285:1 Second Gear: 1.894:1 Third Gear: 1.275:1 Fourth Gear: 1.00:1 Fifth Gear: 0.783:1 Reverse: -3.768:1
Gearing is awesome. I have a stock 22re and I pull through them Hey, I have a w58 because I broke the automatic!
I haven't broke my automatic. But i drove a couple newer cars with 5 speeds, and i really want a manual. i know its not really comparable, but when i compare some newer cars to my dad's 95 1 ton big block 5 speed, its a big eye opener in how much nicer a 5 speed can be!
Lol I managed to first blow out a u joint, then my 7.5" axle, then the a43d auto at last. It completely awakened my truck, I love it. I got a stock weight flywheel and an Exedy OEM replacement clutch (slightly better than stock) and even that gets me far. I bought a new exedy master and slave clutch slaves. Used -3an lines for the clutch. If there's something I want you to do, get a proper manual transmission bracket off a manual truck. And pedals too! Driveshaft if you can. I got mine lengthened and balanced.
