:confused:To be honest I’m clueless on what I’m doing. I need info on if and how to swap from a 4 speed to a 5 speed transmission. I do know I have a W42 4 speed transmission, the number on the casing 33111-20091, and the number on the extension housing 33141-20090. I would like to just bolt a 5 speed without any mods. Not sure what any of the number mean.

hey man, what truck you running? w series gearboxes are interchangable with k series gearboxes( with steel casings not alloy) the bell housing patterns are the same and with minor mods to the gearbox mounts you wont even have to chop the driveshaft. go on wiki-pedia and search w series gearboxes, ive got some information somewhere will find it and and post it

W55, 56, 58 will fit... You will need the tranny mount bracket from the 5-speed...

It's the most desireable one in most cases. Has a decent first gear and the tallest 5th. The 55/56/58 are lighter and stronger than the old 40/50

ive heard that the cast cased 40/50's are stronger and hold up better to large power then the early 58's. by early i mean non supra pre 86, the later 90's ones are supposed to be really strong.

but dont take that as they are weak trannys, any of em should handle anything a 2xr can throw at em.

imho the only down fall for a w58 in a truck is the car gear set, if you ever need to tow something, your not quite geared right. still works just fine tho.

and BillyM on www.celica-gts.com sells a awesome shifter bushing, snap on ratchet accurate shifts, and zero slop. F'n awesome i tell ya, awesome. in fact i bought 5 sets:verdict_in:

81-84ish celica with a 22r. only mod would be the crossmember has to be cut and move the mount pad back 2". stick location and overall length are the same as an 83

I'm trying to find a tranny for my 78 chinook it has a 20r. The 4 speed is going bad I'm out of town in it and would like to pull one out of a junkyard. I want 5th but the lowest first gear, is that the w58? And what can I pull it out of and what year? Thanks

Angel, did you have any problems putting that 5 speed in your 83? Which transmission did you get and were there any gearing issues? I've got the same exact truck and I'm thinking of doing the same.

W58 probably wouldnt be the best for the chinook. Try looking for a regular truck 5spd.
