1983 Power Steering fluid?

    Ok, so I'm working on a 1983 pickup and I'm replacing the steering box because it spins freely and the shaft at the bottom is actually broken off.

    Now I remember reading a long time ago about not using power steering fluid but using ATF or something like that. Could anyone guide me in the right direction as to what fluid is recommended for this setup.

    That is what I was always told, and I believe what the service manual says. I always used good ol red in there and never had any problems.

    just looked it up in my handy Hanes manual, and it says DEXRON II ATF for steering fluid.
