Good People of Toyota Fanfare --

Restoring a 1974 Toyota SR5. When I got it, the engine was removed.

Whoever removed the engine CUT the wire harness just after it branches off to the the starter ( black w/white stripe), water-temp sensor ( green with yellow strip).

But there are other wire I cannot identify!

    Can you help with:

    Black with red stripe
    Green with red stripe
    Black with yellow stripe

( The black with red stripe also shows up on other side of engine near the coil. Where does it attach on the coil??? )

Also altenator seem to have too many wires. See pictures. Does this look correct?

MANY, many thanks for any and all help!

    Wiring - What To Do?

I went to three dealers, and even they have no idea.
    I'm still confused.

    This is the first year Toyota went from the 18rc engine ( 1973 ) to a 20r engine ( 1974 ).

So Toyota reconfigured the wiring starting this year, 1974.

I agree that most are near the ignition. The black with white stripe goes to the starter.

    After that, I'm lost.

The black with red seems to end at the coil.
Where does it start? That's the question. I have no idea.

The green with red seems to end at a driver turn signal. Why is it near the ignition? I don't know...

The black with yellow stripe just seems to be there.

Now, I've noticed some colors change after a certain point. Some even terminate into a female "plug" with nothing going into the wire. I suspect this might be the case here.

    Engine won't turn over.
It gets electrical juice, but won't turn over. Like it's a weak battery.

    I'll take any advice!

    THANKS!

1974 Rewire - Black with Red Stripe

Okay I think I figured out most of this wiring. I went to the junk yard and good luck found me a 1976 Toyota truck. I looked at the wiring on it and found a couple of answers.

The black with yellow strip - it becomes a link to a black wire ( all black ) that runs up to the carbuerator.

The Green with red stripe -- it is a sensor wire that goes to what I think is a temperature gauge sensor. It's a piece that has the brass clip in the middle and to vacuum hoses protuding out into a V-shape.

But I still don't know where the BLACK With Red Strip goes?

    Any ideas or thoughts?

    1974 Restore

I'm in California. And I think that may be part of the issue.

I'm told that back in the 70's California required numerous smog requirements. I've been told that many of the vacuum line and wiring **MIGHT** be a vestige of those smog requirements.

I went to the junk yard again and pulled the part and the attached wire. Now the problem is the water manifold that the part screws into isn't on my engine.

    So I'm still lost!
    :runaway::brickknock:

Anyway, I'll post some pictures, and if any one can identify what's happening here, you are a Toyota God.
