I want to convert my 1990 Toyota pickup 2 wheel drive base model from a non-power steering truck to power steering. I plan to purchase a rebuilt power steering box for the conversion but I am not sure as to what else will I need to complete the swap. I would appreciate any assistance on my project. Thanks. Arnold
I am also seeking assistance. I found some remanufactured power steering boxes on eBay but I would like to know how to set it up and also if there any additional parts to complete the build. Thanks for your message. Good luck on your build.
Cheapest way is to go to a salvage yard and source all the brackets, pumps, hoses etc from a junker with power steering. It will also allow you to see how everything fits together.
Thank you for the information, Fred. I was searching the Internet for assembly diagrams and parts listing for the conversion. I did not think to go to a junk yard to see the set up in place. I will do that today. Thanks again.
the easiest way to do this swap is sourcing all the parts from a junkyard truck . from my experience i know you need the following 1. the complete steering shaft from a power steering truck the power steering fluid reservoir the steering gear box both power steering lines the oil cooler bracket (behind the grill) power steerign pump with brackets and the pulley to make it an easy swap having all the parts off a doner truck will make it swap easy and look factory hope this helps
Thank you for the message. I will try to locate a pickup with a factory power steering setup and gather up the parts you mentioned. Is the non power steering column different from the power steering version? Just curious.
With the couple times ive done the swap 1st 87 toyota base model and a 94 base model with ac both i have had to change out the steering shafts on both the shafts have been shorter than the ones with power steering
Thank you for the steering column information. I was not aware that there was a difference in the steering columns.
@flacostaco , do u know if a 4wd 4Runner of the same year (1989) would work? Or is their steering assembly different than a 2wd pickup? That’s all I can fine right now at the junk yard
i want to say they are diffredifferentnt but im not a 100% sure but i would try sticking to a pickup like yours
